Stay at Home, Read a Book

Today I woke to the news that the PM, Boris Johnson is thinking about asking the over 50’s to stay at home, to prevent another national lockdown. As someone who is closer to 60 than 50 it is not as disheartening as it might first seem. When I started work in 1980, I thought I was going to be retiring in January 2021, at the age of 60. The British government then decided, several years ago, that we were all living too long and they couldn’t afford to pay pensions for so may years. They raised the retirement age to 67 for both men and women. They phased it in, very quickly for some, so my pension will now be paid in Oct 2026. So whilst I don’t relish the idea of not being able to go out, eat out to celebrate Big Birthdays, Christmas, play croquet and to shield at home, (or self-imprisonment as I look upon it), it does mean that I may be able to slow down as originally intended and write a book or two.

I have always loved being at home, curling up on the sofa, aromatherapy oils burning, fire on, with curtains closed to shut out the dreich weather outside. Autumn is just around the corner, as we have just invited August in to our lives. Although we will mourn the loss of summer 2020, it is something that I will embrace. Plenty of opportunity to embrace hygge days.

Writing gives us the opportunity to take you on a journey. Where would you like to go?
